South Texas Police Officer Killed In Shooting, Suspect Also Dead

MISSION, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A South Texas police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Thursday evening and a suspect in the incident also died at the scene, authorities say.

Mission police Chief Robert Dominguez said Cpl. Jose Luis Espericueta died at a hospital Thursday night after being shot by the 33-year-old suspect in the eastern part of the city 6 miles west of McAllen.

A previous report from a public information officer at the scene said a suspect was taken into custody, but this was later corrected by authorities to the suspect being dead.

According to police, a woman had waved down a passing officer about her son's behavior. Her son was apparently found walking along a road by police.

Police said the man ran away but then turned and fired at the officers, striking Espericueta. The suspect was shot multiple times and died at the hospital.

Espericueta was a 13-year veteran with the department and was married with two children.

The suspect's identity also hasn't been released.
