Source: Mavs 'Zeroing In' On Jameer Nelson

DALLAS, Texas (105.3 THE FAN) - The Mavs continue to explore ways to fill their roster with proven-but-affordable veterans and with the in-flux circumstances surrounding Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen are now, a source tells us, "zeroing in" on former Orlando point guard Jameer Nelson.

Dallas has collected point guards this summer with the trade for Raymond Felton and the re-signing of Devin Harris. But Dallas has the $2.7 million room exception to spend and seems to be acknowledging the long-shot status of Allen there.

Nelson averaged 12.1 points and seven assists a game for the Magic last season. The 10-year vet is smallish at 6-0 but plays with a physical style.

Dallas could use Nelson as part of a rotation at the point, but as much as the Mavs like Harris off the bench, Nelson could end up as a starter should he choose to sign in Dallas. The Mavs, by the way, pledge that they value Felton as a player and are not looking at dumping him via stretch or trade.

Meanwhile, the Mavs are a front-court shooter short due to the voiding of the contract of veteran Rashard Lewis, in need knee surgery.

Mavs veteran Shawn Marion is also on the market but as we reported Tuesday, he's not presently a candidate for the room-MLE.
