Son: Hockey Great Gordie Howe Didn't Have 'Major Stroke'

A son of hockey great Gordie Howe says an MRI has revealed the hockey great didn't endure another large stroke this week, as the family had feared.

In a text message Tuesday night to The Associated Press, Mark Howe says the test showed his father didn't have a "big stroke" on Monday. He couldn't immediately provide other details of the MRI, taken Tuesday evening, including whether he'd sustained a minor stroke.

Earlier Tuesday, the hockey player's daughter, Cathy Purnell, said her father suffered a "significant stroke" -- his third since late October -- and was hospitalized.

Mark Howe said the family planned to release a statement.
