NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Six Flags Entertainment Corp. is expanding its presence south of the border.

Officials with the North Texas company, based in Grand Prairie, say there are plans to renovate and re-open a long-closed water park in Oaxtepec, Mexico. The 67-acre park will operate under the Hurricane Harbor name.

The previous owner of the park was Mexico's national social security entity.

As it stands, the amusement park company plans on spending between $16 million and $18 million to expand and renovate the water park, which shut down five years ago. Proposed changes to the park include adding new water slides, rides, eateries and retail locations.

The new water park, expected to employ some 1,500 workers, is slated to open in early 2017.

The company is making the move despite missing 3rd quarter profit forecasts.

Currently Six Flags operates 18 theme parks in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Members of management say  amusement park in Mexico City is one of the fastest-growing in the company.

Six Flags Over Texas, in Arlington, is currently expanding their Gotham City section and adding three new Batman-themed ridesThe Riddler RevengeCatwoman Whip, and Harley Quinn Spinsanity. Work on the new rides is expected to be complete in time for the park's opening weekend next month.
