Sen. Ted Cruz Among Speakers At National Anthem Commemoration
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — National figures in politics and evangelical Christianity descend on Charlotte for an event linking churches around the country by streaming video.
The Sunday evening event from the First Baptist Church of Charlotte is designed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the British attack on Baltimore that inspired "The Star Spangled Banner."
Organizers want fellow evangelicals to remember the bleak days when the anthem was written during the War of 1812 shortly after the British army burned much of official Washington, D.C. The organizers of "Star Spangled Sunday" say that's when God intervened and a series of subsequent events saved America.
Scheduled speakers include Sen. Ted Cruz, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and Steve Green, president of the crafting store chain Hobby Lobby.
