DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - With six Richardson ISD schools and 41 Dallas ISD schools closed Friday due to power outages, many school kids got an unexpected three day weekend.

The Aldrete's home in the L Streets neighborhood of Northeast Dallas lost power for about 20 hours, after raging wind and rain took down lines across North Texas.

Amy Aldrete found, with three kids home from school, she had three helpers to clean up the yard.

"We are absolutely cleaning up! They're not allowed to sit down if I'm working," said Aldrete.

Daughter Isabel says it's more fun than school. St. Patrick's Catholic School where the Aldretes attend, was also closed.

The family took full advantage of the lack of power, roasting smores in the fireplace and telling ghost stories by candlelight. By noon Friday, their power was restored.

Oncor crews worked throughout East Dallas, with no specified timeline for when all customers would be back online.

"We were worried about our neighbors, because we didn't have much damage, and there was lots of other damage," said Aldrete.

Some of the most head-turning damage appeared along Ferndale Road.

Pat Underwood's next door neighbor had a large tree fall through the roof. No one was injured. Crews spent hours Friday hauling off the giant trunk and limbs.

"It was plenty scary. I don't want to go through that again," said Underwood.

In the 50 years she's lived on Ferndale, she says this is the worst storm she's ever seen.

"At one point it slowed down and I thought I was in the eye of a hurricane. Then it picked right back up," said Underwood.
