ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Facing a fourth down and trailing 20-17 late in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys had a decision to make.

Go for it, or punt the ball away with 6:00 remaining. The Cowboys faced a fourth-and-6 from the Detroit 42-yard line -- well out of field goal range.

As he approached the sideline, quarterback Tony Romo knew he wanted the offense to stay on the field.

"[Garrett] had already made the decision," said Romo. "I didn't have to do much lobbying."

Romo says the decision wasn't exactly a no-brainer -- despite Garrett's quick decision. But the decision speaks volumes about Garrett's confidence in the Cowboys offense.

"You could punt it there too. That's not a 100-percent situation," said Romo. "I give credit to coach Garrett for making that call and going to try and win the football game at that point. It shows he believes in us, and I think he thinks in that situation he wants us on the field to have a chance to win a playoff game."

The gamble payed off, as tight end Jason Witten reeled in a 21-yard reception to extend the game-winning drive.

"When you get the opportunity to work Witten in a one-on-one situation, you should go there because you've heard me say this a lot, he's the best tight end in ball," said Garrett. "And he's the most reliable player I've ever been around."

Romo says the defender initially undercut the route, but Witten adjusted to find an opening in the Lions' secondary.

"It was a credit to him," said Romo. "He wasn't going to get open running it the other way...He's obviously been doing that for years. To go to him in that situation was a no-brainer."

Had the fourth down conversion failed, the Cowboys' season might be over. But it didn't, and Dallas lives to play another day.

"I think it was a good decision now that we look back," said Romo.
