Romo Calls Out Fans, Says Cowboys Were Road Team
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- It's been a running joke about AT&T Stadium. The national media and opposing fans have called out the Dallas Cowboys for their lack of support at home.
The criticism got real on Sunday.
After a 20-17 overtime win over Houston, quarterback Tony Romo expressed his disappointment in the team's non-existent "homefield advantage".
"There is no question, today we played on the road in that football game through a lot of it," said Romo following the game. "There was probably half and half, roughly, I don't know what it was. More than anything you can tell by the crowd noise. That was every bit as loud as going to St. Louis or Tennessee."
Hear Romo's comments
Romo says the offense was forced to use a silent count for most of the game, something typically done only on the road. Tight end Jason Witten, unprovoked, made the same note after the game.
"We need to do a better job as a team and a fan base to make sure that we understand how big a difference it is playing at home," said Romo. "If we're able to have that, we're tough to beat at home when we have that home field advantage. Just going forward, I am going to start to push that issue a little bit where we can have home field advantage."
Romo didn't make it clear how he would "push" that issue moving forward. But one suggestion was made: Romo could just purchase additional tickets himself and disperse them to Cowboys fans.
"If I need to, it would be worth it," said Romo.
Observers saw it when 49ers fans invaded AT&T Stadium, and it was expected and repeated when the Saints came to town. The only difference now -- the players are chiming in.
"There was crowd noise in the stadium," said Witten. "Hopefully we can get that fixed."
