DENTON COUNTY (CBS 11 NEWS) - Misty Ross did not sleep well Monday night.
"It's been a very stressful night," the Denton resident said. "We got few hours of sleep."
Ross and her neighbors have been watching an unpredictable trespasser on their property -- the Trinity River. The water began rising as warnings of possible flooding reached their home Monday night, and Ross has been busy since.
"We went to Wal-Mart and got big crates and loaded them and we're ready to go as soon as they tell us to go."
Important documents, baby pictures, precious family items - they're all packed and ready to go if they have to abandon their home. "We've worked really hard to have everything that we have and it could all be washed away," she said. "We don't have flood insurance."
Others aren't waiting on the water. They packed and left. And some are protecting their prized possessions and their loved at the Diamond T Arena. Operator Crystal Allcorn said, "I didn't leave here until about 11 and I got phone calls from people who were scared that their horses were going to get flooded out of their homes."
Allcorn has had 15 horses brought to the safety of the high ground and her stalls so far. A lot of horses are raised in low-lying pastureland. And by moving them their owners are protecting huge investments. "Some of these horses in this part of the country can range anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars," she said.
Even though the horses are worth a lot Allcorn is charging to use the stall space for a couple of days. She said, "Right now I'm doing it free of charge for the next couple of days because I don't think that I want to charge somebody that is worried that their home and their barn and their land and their animals are going to be swept away by flooding waters. There is no way I'd ever do that."
