DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Exclusive video obtained by CBS 11 News shows a crime that residents said is destroying their neighborhood. In just a matter of seconds, taggers can be seen on a home security camera leaving their mark on one of several spots all over Deep Ellum.
Residents have been documenting the damage on social media, because they are fed up with a crime that, to them, seems to be as rampant as ever.
The city can paint over the graffiti, leaving behind an unsightly patch. Or, residents can spend hundreds of their own dollars to have the graffiti removed.
It is suspected that some of these same taggers also defaced a historic building in downtown. West End Association chairman Joe Groves explained that the building cannot be repaired without permanent damage. "When they tag, deface and otherwise vandalize these buildings," Groves said, "it's a very expensive process to get them cleaned up. It's not a matter of just painting over it."
The Dallas Police Department did not respond to a request for comments about the concerns of Deep Ellum residents.
