Residents: Dog Poop To Dollars Revenue Source Stinks

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - The Avana El Dorado apartment complex has ordered its residents to bring their pets by this month for DNA samples so they can start targeting tenants who don't scoop their dog's poop.
Offending pet owners will be fined $500 for violations – a cost that doesn't sit well with residents.
"I don't have $500 to just be giving away," said dog owner Nathaniel Gudger. He's worried his dog Sade's daily walks may cost him cash.
The complex hired a Dallas-based company called pet CSI to test pets. The company promotes itself as a profit tool for apartment complexes to turn "poop into profits."
"That's just one of our taglines -- just putting poop in your profits. Those are marketing tools that we use," said CSI President Cedric Moses.
He insists he's not marketing a money grab and that his DNA kits are legitimate.
"They love it," said Moses of tenants who are pleased with the poop for profit impact.
Apartment complexes were told revenue from the fines may fund new on-site amenities, too.
Management for the Avana El Dorado apartments sent CBS 11 the following statement when asked for a comment about the DNA testing:
"It's in the interest of the health and welfare of our residents and their pets."
