WISE COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) -- A homeowner shot and killed a man attempting to force his way into a private residence early Friday morning in Wise County.

County Sheriff David Walker says the shooter, who owns the house, first heard someone attempting to gain entry at the front door several times.

"[The homeowner] went outside and didn't see anybody," said Sheriff Walker. "He came back in the house and it started again. He went outside at what point he found a male subject trying to climb the wooden fence."

Walker says the homeowner confronted the man and began to struggle with him.

"The homeowner told the suspect that he was armed and continued to struggle with him," said Sheriff Walker. "He tried to get around the homeowner into the home, there at the front door, and the homeowner shot him one time."

Sheriff Walker says no arrests have been made in the shooting, as current evidence suggests that the resident was protecting his home.

Officers are still investigating the incident and looking for a possible motive.
