ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will miss Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals after suffering a back injury last week.
Brandon Weeden is expected to start in his place.
Romo was hit with a knee to the back in the third quarter of Monday night's loss to Washington. He missed two series while receiving treatment in the locker room, which included an injection for pain. He returned for the team's final two drives.
As 105.3 The Fan reported this week, Romo's injury is more extensive than the "back contusion'' as billed by the Cowboys. ESPN reported that Romo suffered two fractured transverse process in his back, an injury that would limit his functionality.
Weeden completed 4-of-6 passes with a touchdown in relief on Monday night before Romo returned to action. In two drives, he led the team to 10 points, including an 80-yard touchdown drive to force overtime.
His last start came on Dec. 1, 2013 with the Browns, when he threw for 370 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 32-28 loss to Jacksonville.
Rookie quarterback Dustin Vaughan has been activated for the first time in his career to serve as Weeden's backup.
Dallas will also be playing without two starters on its offensive line.
Mackenzy Bernadeau will start for left guard Ronald Leary, who injured his groin last week. Jermey Parnell will start his third consecutive game in place of Doug Free at right tackle.
