Rangers To Hire Pirates Bench Coach Banister As Next Manager

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Texas Rangers will hire Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister as the team's next manager, sources confirm to CBS Sports.

Banister has been a member of the Pirates organization for 29 years. He was drafted by the Pirates in 1986, appearing in one major league game. He was named the Pirates bench coach in November 2010 after former Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle was named manager.

Banister and Hurdle helped transform the Pirates from a perennial NL Central bottom dwellar to a perennial postseason team. Pittsburgh has now qualified for consecutive postseasons after missing the previous 20 seasons.

Tim Bogar, who served as interim manger after Ron Washington resigned, was thought to be the favorite for the position. The team went 14-8 under Bogar to close out the season.

Bogar, Banister, and Cleveland Indians bullpen coach Kevin Cash were the finalists announced on Tuesday.
