Active Shooter Suspect Dead At Walmart In Amarillo

AMARILLO (CBSDFW.COM) - Police have identified the suspect who opened fire at a Walmart store in Amarillo this afternoon as Mohammad Moghaddam, 54.

According to officials in Randall County, was killed and no other injuries or casualties were reported. The incident unfolded early Tuesday afternoon at a Walmart store located in the 4200 block of Canyon Drive in Amarillo.

Capt. Larry Davis of the Amarillo Fire Department confirmed to CBS affiliate KFDA that Moghaddam was dead. Randall County officials said on Facebook that Moghaddam was shot and killed by the Amarillo Police Department's SWAT team.

Davis said that all civilians inside of the store were evacuated, including some which were identified as hostages. "The suspect has been shot by APD SWAT and has died. Hostages inside are safe," county officials added. The Amarillo Police Department had earlier confirmed that they were at the scene with an armed suspect in the Walmart store.

Officials said that Moghaddam was a disgruntled employee. Randall County officials stated, "We do consider this a workplace violence situation."

The city has asked that the public continue to avoid the area, despite the scene now being safe. Roads around the store remain closed to traffic. "We want to thank everyone who helped spread the word today during the intense hostage situation," officials said on Facebook. "Your shares helped us keep the area clear during an extremely dangerous situation... and helped us inform the public in a very timely manner."

The Special Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.
