WASHINGTON (CBSDFW/AP) - Quarterback Robert Griffin III has been released by the Washington Redskins just about the time he tweeted what sounded a lot like a goodbye to fans of the Redskins.
Griffin wrote Monday: "It was a blessing guys. I just want to say thank you."
Washington made clear it would part ways with the former Baylor QB and Heisman trophy winner Griffin by Wednesday to get his 2016 contract off the books before it became guaranteed for about $16 million.
So it was just a matter of when a move would come.
As soon as he was cut, ending a four-year tenure with the team that traded a bevy of draft picks to acquire him, Griffin becomes a free agent and can sign anywhere.
NFL free agency begins Wednesday.
