Rape Suspect Arrested In Navarro County
UNIVERSITY PARK (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Navarro County have arrested one man suspected of committing at least two different sexual assaults, including one against an SMU student near campus. Torey Jamal Harris is now behind bars after investigators were able to piece together information from two cases.
The attack near SMU took place on September 7 as a woman was running through a park. Police said that the victim was threatened with a cutting tool and raped. The incident made a lot of people very nervous. Authorities actually increased patrols of the area after the attack, and they released a composite sketch of the suspect.
But another attack four days ago helped police connect the case to Harris. Navarro College officers arrested the 23-year-old suspect Monday after a sexual assault in Corsicana. In this case, the suspect used an ice pick to restrain the victim.
Police in University Park received a call from the Navarro County officers, saying that the suspect in the sketch looked similar to the arrested man.
Harris later confessed to the crime, law enforcement officials said. When he was questioned, he knew the name of the University Park victim. "Our victim gave him a name," stated Chief Greg Spradlin with the University Park Police Department. "And then, when our detectives were conducting the interview of him, he repeated that name."
Now, investigators are trying to determine if Harris could be connected to any other sexual assault cases, and if there could be more victims.
