Rangers Select OF Delino DeShields From Astros In Rule 5 Draft

SAN DIEGO (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Texas Rangers have selected outfielder Delino DeShields from the Houston Astros' Triple-A Oklahoma City roster in the major league phase of Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.

With the selection of DeShields, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club's 40-man roster.

DeShields, 22, has spent his entire professional career in the Houston organization after being selected in the first round (8th overall) of the 2010 MLB draft. At Double-A Corpus Christi last season, DeShields batted .236 (97-411) with 11 home runs and 57 RBI in 114 games.

In each of the last three seasons, DeShields has stolen at least 50 bases. In 2012, he became the first player in minor league history to hit 10+ home runs (12) and steal 100+ (101) bases in a year.

DeShields entered this year rated the 13th best best prospect in the Houston system by Baseball America.

Players selected in the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft must remain on the 25-man Major League roster for the entirety of the season and be active for a minimum of 90 days.

If not, the player is offered back to the team he was selected from for $25,000.

Additional Transactions

Texas selected two players in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft.

1B/OF Rock Shoulders, 23, was selected from the Chicago Cubs organization. The 6-foot-2, 225 pound Shoulders hit .223 (69-310) with 16 doubles, 12 home runs, and 42 RBI over 91 games with High-A Daytona in the Cubs organization.

The team also chose infielder Hiram Martinez, 22, from the Marlins organization. Martinez hit .229 over 31 games in Low-A and short-season ball in 2014.

The team also signed RHP Anthony Bass, OF Antoan Richardson, and RHP Ross Wolf to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.
