ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Texas Rangers outfielder Delino DeShields has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for May.

The speedy 22-year-old led all AL rookies in runs scored (22), triples (2), stolen bases (10), walks (15) and on-base percentage (.406), and finished third in hits (24) and RBI (9).

He batted .296 for the month. In 38 games played, he has stolen 12 bases and has been caught just once.

The outfielder has been a force for Texas this season since being selected in the Rule 5 Draft in December. DeShields spent four full seasons in the Astros' system, stealing 236 bases, including 101 in 2012.

DeShields is the first Ranger to win the award since Justin Grimm in April 2013. Teammate Keone Kela also received consideration for the award.
