Heavy rainfall increases flood chances in North Texas Thursday

NORTH TEXAS – Flooding continues to be the main concern with the weather alert in effect this afternoon. 

Several flash flood warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service for areas south of I-20. These should continue through mid-afternoon, where some locations have already seen over 2" of rainfall and another 0.5"-2" remain possible.

Areas highlighted in yellow to orange in the radar estimated rainfall image indicate spots where 1"-2"+ of rainfall has occurred over the last 12 hours.

The threat for severe thunderstorms with hail and wind is shifting farther south, into Central Texas.

You can see a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Central Texas and counties farther west.

No North Texas counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch this afternoon.

Please remain vigilant as rain continues to fall this afternoon. Coverage should decrease after sunset, becoming much more isolated as heading into early Friday morning.

The flood watch has been expanded to include all of the Metroplex through 7 a.m. Friday.

Widespread rainfall totals of 1"-3" are likely with some locations picking up 5"+.

Please remember to turn around, don't drown. Don't drive through water-covered roadways.

While a few showers and storms are possible Friday, most areas will be dry with partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 80s. 

The sunshine and heat are back this weekend, with highs in the 90s as high pressure builds in.

Our stretch of 90-degree days will continue into the middle of next week with storm chances returning Tuesday evening as a front stalls out along the Red River.
