Puppy Starts New Year In Storm Drain

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A very lucky dog is back at home tonight, thanks to Dallas Fire Rescue.

Little Chloe made a daring escape from her home off Belt Line and Coit, only to find herself trapped in a drain pipe.

"I'm happy to have her home...didn't want to leave her down there to die," said Chloe's owner, Verna Marella.  "She's really smart and really feisty...and not afraid of anything. She just goes."

The Terrier was able to sneak out of Marella's house, but ended up stuck in a drain pipe.

"We were calling her and we could hear her crying, but we couldn't get her out."

Dallas Fire Rescue was called to help.  They took it a step further, calling in their Urban Search and Rescue team, with special training and special equipment for cases like this.

"Once they figure out where the dog is with the sonar equipment, they cut one small hole in the top, stick the camera down in the pipe," explained DFR Captain Jason Genn.  "They can look either direction until they find the dog, and then they make one small hole around the dog and then bring him out."

Chloe was a little shaken up and in need of a bath, but just fine once she was back Marella's arms.

"They will be getting a big batch of cookies over there at the fire department," Marella laughed.
