Pull-In Parking To Be A Thing Of The Past In Parts Of Denton

DENTON (CBS 11 NEWS) - A major parking change is coming to part of downtown Denton. Soon drivers will have just one choice on how to park -- backwards.
For downtown Denton businesses already dealing with construction on East Hickory, back-in parking will be, well, another transition.
Brett Houston, a worker at the Mellow Mushroom, said while using gestures, "People honking at each other, 'cause you're gonna pull up and then somebody is gonna put the brake lights on and they're gonna be right there. Then they're gonna have to pull back and pull in and figure it out… there's probably gonna be a couple fender benders."
The street redo is intended to make East Hickory, between Bell and The Square, more pedestrian friendly, while also adding 53 additional spaces.
City of Denton transportation director Mark Nelson explained that the space comes from, "Backing in and taking some of the previously parallel parking spaces and turning those into angled-in, back-in parking."
Some people claim the change will somehow frustrate female drivers. What?
"That's ridiculous! Come on. That's ridiculous," Houston said laughing. "If you have trouble back-in parking it's not because you're male or female, it's just because you don't know how to back in park very well. That's just what it is."
Lady driver Farah Padamsee said, "I am like the pro parallel parker! If someone needs to parallel park, they'll ask me.
When asked about the 'vicious' rumor that women weren't going to be able to back-in park, Sam Solomon said, "They'll do it better than we [men] do. Like everything else."

The bottom line, while all the construction remains at the front door, the direction of the parking is a secondary worry.
The new back-in parking won't start for another two to three weeks.
