LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Republican Donald Trump won Michigan's presidential primary to keep intact his front-runner status, while Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders vied Tuesday for a large delegate haul in the industrial state where they tangled aggressively over economic issues.

Trump defeated Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida — whose order of finish was unresolved in early returns.

With more than a third of precincts reporting, Trump had 37 percent — followed by Kasich with 25 percent, Cruz with 24 percent and Rubio with 9 percent.

Fifty-nine delegates will be divided proportionally among the Republicans who win at least 15 percent of the vote. Trump will win at least 21 delegates in Michigan, Kasich will win at least 15 delegates and Cruz will win at least 12.

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are too close to call in Michigan.

Trump and Clinton won the presidential primaries Tuesday in Mississippi.

The Clinton win continues the former secretary of state's strong performance in the South, fueled by the heavy support of African-American voters.

Trump gained a huge margin among Republicans who wanted a candidate who "tells it like it is," while Ted Cruz ran strong among people who identify as very conservative and those wanting a candidate who shares their values, according to early results of exit polls conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press and television networks.

Early results of the exit polls also showed black voters overwhelmingly chose Clinton over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. She also won a sizeable majority among white voters, who were about a third of overall Democratic primary voters Tuesday.

Before Tuesday, Clinton had won primaries in every state that neighbors Mississippi.
