TARRANT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Pre-registration is underway for the 11th Annual Tarrant County Back To School Roundup.
To kick off the event, Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price lead kids in a "we love school" cheer in the library at Dunbar High School. Students got free backpacks and haircuts as part of the pre-registration event.
Angelo Williams, 13, said he's grateful to get the things he needs. He said, "This event is helping a lot of kids get stuff, and helping a lot of parents."
Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley explained that events like the Roundup are important, especially since nearly one-fourth of Tarrant County kids live in poverty.
"What we try to do is to make sure… we want to do everything we can to make them successful as they go to school – not just the pre-kindergarten [students], but all the way up through the 12th grade."
The Back To School Roundup will be held at the Will Rogers Memorial Center on Thursday, August 20. But unlike in years past, when you could just show up, this time pre-registration is required.
Pre-registration events are scheduled throughout Tarrant County and families must be signed up by August 17.
In addition to kids activities, games and interactive demonstrations, students who meet the eligibility requirements can attend the Roundup and get free school supplies; health, dental and visual screenings; haircuts and immunizations.
