Poll Shows Texas Governor's Race Is Tightening
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - A new Texas Lyceum poll finds the Governor's race is tightening.
The poll, conducted between September 11-25th gives Republican Greg Abbott a nine point lead over Democrat Wendy Davis, 49-40%.
The margin of error is +/- 3.8%.
It's the second recent poll showing Abbott's lead is in the single digits in this solidly Republican state.
The election is a little over a month away.
The poll finds Davis, the State Senator from Fort Worth leads with Hispanic voters, 62-26 percent and African-American voters, 83-3 percent.
Abbott, the state Attorney General leads with Anglos 62-27 percent, Independent voters 38-32 percent, and women 46-44 percent.
University of Texas professor Daron Shaw who conducted the poll says, "Davis is running slightly ahead of other Democrats on the ballot and over-performs compared to Democrats from recent statewide races."
But a nine point lead he says will still be tough to overcome. "The number of candidates who have made up this kind of deficit in the last month, in a state where party ID favors the other side so consistently, is close to zero."
The Abbott campaign announced Wednesday it raised $7.8 million between July 1st-September 25th and has $30.1 million cash on hand.
In the Lieutenant Governor's race, Republican Dan Patrick leads Democrat Leticia Van de Putte by 14 percent, 47-33 percent.
