DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — A Dallas police officer has been placed on routine administrative leave after firing shots at suspected shoplifters fleeing NorthPark Mall in a car, police say.

NorthPark Mall security contacted Dallas police around 1:10 p.m. Sunday about suspected shoplifters, three women between the ages of 20 and 30, trying to leave the mall, Dallas police said. The department says a mall security officer stood in front of the Ford Taurus to prevent the women from leaving and jumped on the hood of the car to avoid being run over when they continued to drive.

A uniformed, off-duty Dallas police officer responded to try to arrest the women. Witnesses say the officer fired at the car. Police say there were no injuries, and the women successfully left the scene.

The department says the officer has been placed on routine administrative leave. Detectives are investigating the incident.
