ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM)  - Arlington police shot a man who they say fired on them in a car lot Thursday afternoon.

He was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

Police were called to Galaxy Auto Sales shortly after someone demanded to speak to owner.

Police said they were negotiating with the man for a couple of hours to try to get him to get out of his car and talk.

According to Arlington Police SWAT later responded to the scene and attempted to get the suspect to surrender.

The SWAT officers positioned an armored vehicle in front of the suspect's vehicle to prevent him from going mobile and fleeing the area.

Police said the suspect fired a shotgun through the passenger window of his vehicle.  SWAT officers deployed gas in the direction of the suspect to gain compliance.

The suspect then fired his shotgun out of the driver's side window in the direction of officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

Division Street between Truman and Collins was closed due to this police activity at Galaxy Auto Sales.

No officers were hurt.

Police recovered a shotgun from the suspect, who's identity has not yet been released.
