CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Authorities in Carrollton are investigating a fatal shooting involving a police officer. It happened at about 8:30 a.m on Wednesday morning at an InTown Suites located in the 1200 block of Trinity Mills Road. But officers had been at the hotel since Tuesday night.

According to Jolene Devito with the Carrollton Police Department, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Malcolm Hickson, was thought to be operating a sex trafficking business from one of the hotel rooms. Authorities were at the scene throughout the night attempting to apprehend the man.

According to police, Hickson left the hotel room on Wednesday morning with a gun in his waistband, and reached for that weapon as officers were approaching. Hickson was shot by a SWAT officer and pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.

"He initially put his hands up as the officers demanded, but then reached for the gun," said Devito. "That's when he was shot once by a member of our SWAT team." Video from the scene later Wednesday morning showed a handgun on the pavement in the hotel's parking lot.

No officers were injured during this incident.

There were at least two women in the room with the suspect during the night. "We believe he was holding women against their will in the hotel room, and operating a sex trafficking business," Devito said. One of those women was able to escape from the hotel room and speak with police. The ages of the women are not known.

"She is obviously shaken," Devito said about the woman who escaped. "We are grateful she was brave enough to get away and get help. This was a very dangerous man."
