Police end search for suspect in hammer attacks across North Texas

Suspect in North Texas hammer attacks in custody, police say

PLANO — A man accused of attacking people with hammers is now in police custody, officials said Thursday morning.

Around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Plano Police Detectives arrested 26-year-old Charles Maurice Murray in connection with an aggravated assault in Plano on Tuesday.

Plano police say a man attacked someone with a hammer around 7 p.m.Tuesday along Coit Road near Plano Parkway at a convenience store.

The victim was hit with the hammer several times before the suspect ran away, according to police.

"We received a report of a male that was injured. When the officers got there, they found a male was in the bathroom. He was bleeding," said Jennifer Chapman, with the Plano Police Department.

Plano police said Wednesday they believe the suspect is responsible for several unprovoked attacks across North Texas in the last 24 hours. PPD says it believes he traveled across the area using DART public transit. DART said an attack happened on a train from Plano to Dallas. The suspect got off at the Lovers Lane stop.

Chapman said the attacks all appear to be unprovoked. There is a possibility he could be a member of the unsheltered.

"In the same surveillance videos, we do see that he's wearing the same thing," she said. "So it's quite possible that he may be homeless, but we have not confirmed that."

Acting on a tip, Dallas Police Officers responded to a home in Dallas to confirm the information and locate the suspect. After obtaining an arrest warrant, officers took Murray into custody without incident and transported him to the Plano City Jail.

He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

This incident is currently under investigation by the Crimes Against Persons Unit.
