DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police are searching for a man who, they explained, stole an SUV with 7-year-old twin boys in the backseat. The incident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. early Wednesday at a gas station in west Dallas.

According to police, the grandmother of the boys had just gone into the gas station, located near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Harry Hines Boulevard, to pay for gas and get a bite to eat while the children were asleep. Witnesses said that an unidentified black man then stole her vehicle.

One witness even followed the suspect and was involved in a crash with the stolen SUV. The vehicle rolled along Interstate-30 near Hampton Road. The suspect then jumped out of the vehicle and ran off.

The boys were taken to Children's Medical Center of Dallas, but were not seriously injured. They have already been released.

Meanwhile, the car thief remains on the loose. Detectives spent early Wednesday morning combing over surveillance camera footage to see what the cameras captured at the Dallas gas station.
