DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — A 31-year-old man has been arrested after a six hour SWAT standoff in Dallas Wednesday.

At around 10:04 a.m. Jan. 4, police were behind a car with "possible stolen plates" near the 500 block of North St. Augustine Road and called in their helicopter, Air1, to assist.

The driver of the vehicle, 31-year-old Kevin Knowles, sped away from officers and eventually crashed in the area of 6700 Bruton Rd.

Police said Knowles ran from the scene and into a golf course at 2323 N. Jim Miller Rd. He then stole two golf carts and shot at a citizen trying to stop him. That citizen was not injured.

Officers shortly located Knowles in a concrete drainage ditch where he barricaded himself.

Police said that over the course of the next several hours, Knowles shot at responding SWAT officers as they tried to negotiate with him. The rounds fired by Knowles hit a search robot and a ballistic shield held by one of the officers.

Knowles threw his weapon and surrendered after a chemical agent was used.

No officers were injured during the standoff, and Knowles was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

However, one person was taken to the hospital due to injuries from the initial car crash.

Dallas County Jail

Knowles is currently in the Lew Sterrett Justice Center, where he faces the following charges:

  • Aggravated assault of a public servant
  • Two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle
  • Evading arrest/detention with a vehicle
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • Accident involving injury
  • Unlawful possession of a weapon
