FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - A gunman, who may have been trying rob a man in his house, triggered a massive shootout with police that left the suspect dead on a northeast Fort Worth street.

"It sounded like a war going on, man!" said Kyle Saldana, who lives near where the shootout happened.

A fight between the armed intruder and 29-year-old P. J. Maceyra spilled out into the street. Maceyra and his older brother Samuel ran from one side of the house, the gunman from the other just as police arrived on the scene.

Police exchanged gunfire with the suspect as he walked down the street.

"It was like the Wild West," Saldana said. "You could hear four or five guns going back and forth."

One bullet hit the truck the Maceyra's were hiding behind.

Police shot and killed the gunman.

Samuel Maceyra, brother of the victim says the police saved his four boys and bed-ridden mother who were in the house during the shoot out.

"I think he would have got us all," he said. "I'm just thankful today that God was watching over us.

Both officers have been on the force since 2011. They are on administrative leave while police investigate the shooting. Police say they have dash cam and surveillance video they are reviewing. The gunman has not yet been identified.
