Police Investigate Dallas High-Rise Shooting

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Authorities in Dallas are investigating a deadly police shooting at a luxury high-rise apartment complex. The incident happened at about 1:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of McKinnon Street, in the uptown area. More than a dozen police squad cars surrounded the scene.

Officers responded to a call about a burglary in progress at The Glass House apartment complex. Neighbors said that they heard some yelling followed by around six gunshots. Witnesses also saw a man engaged in a short standoff with police officers. That man was later seen on the ground in the doorway of the complex's lobby.

The gunshots shattered the lobby windows of the apartment complex. No officers were injured during this incident.

According to Deputy Chief Gil Garza, a 47-year-old man who lives at the apartment complex approached an employee and stated that his home was being burglarized. The employee called police. But the resident then barricaded himself inside of a hallway until officers arrived. Police spoke with the barricaded resident, who had said that he was armed, Garza said.

The apartment complex employee said that the resident then shot at police. Those officers retreated and took cover, continuing efforts to speak with the man. But as the resident kept firing and advancing toward officers, Garza said, police returned fire.

"There was at least 6 shots that I heard and it was just one after another being right above it - it felt like I felt it," said neighbor Kassidy Todd.

The resident was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. His weapon was recovered.

Officials later identified the man as Michael Edward Schmidt. A former co-worker of Schmidt's confirms he worked at the Schmidt Law Firm.  No one from the firm was willing to make a comment on the events leading up to the shooting.  According to the firm's website, Schmidt handled medical negligence, wrongful death, and product liability cases.

One of Schmidt's friends was shocked to hear the new about the shooting. "I never saw anything remotely close to this in his character or his spirit and it's just I'm still speechless," said Van Ball.

CBS 11 has confirmed Schmidt's 11 -year-old daughter was upstairs in his unit at the time he was shot.
