PEARLAND, Texas (AP/CBSDFW.COM) — Authorities say former Major League Baseball player Darryl Hamilton has been killed in a murder-suicide at a suburban Houston home.

Police say Hamilton was found Sunday after he was fatally shot at the home in the community of Pearland.

Police Lt. Patrick Savage says an initial investigation determined Hamilton was shot several times and that a woman in the home died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was identified as Monica Jordan.

Hamilton played 13 seasons in the majors before retiring in 2001, and the standout center fielder was part of the 2000 New York Mets team that went to the World Series.

The Louisiana-native played for Texas during the 1996 season, helping the Rangers to their first AL West title and playoff appearance in franchise history. The outfielder appeared in 148 games for Texas, collecting 184 hits while hitting .293.

The team, which will hold a moment of silence for Hamilton prior to Tuesday's game against Oakland, released the following statement on Monday:

"The Rangers are shocked and saddened to hear of Darryl Hamilton's untimely passing. Darryl played just one season for Texas, but it was a memorable year. Signed as a free agent in December 1995, Darryl was the leadoff hitter and centerfielder for the first playoff team in franchise history in 1996. He was not only an offensive catalyst and defensive standout on the field but also was a club leader and an outstanding teammate.

In later years, Darryl was a welcome guest to Arlington in his roles with Major League Baseball. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends as his passing is a tremendous loss."

He was currently working as an analyst for the MLB Network.

Police say a 14-month old child of Hamilton and Jordan was found unharmed at the home.
