AUSTIN (AP) — Police in Austin, Texas, say an officer has died days after being injured in a motorcycle wreck while escorting a funeral procession.

The department announced in a statement Sunday that Senior Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq died of his injuries related to the crash.

The statement says Abdul-Khaliq had been with the department for 17 years and previously served in the Marines.

Police say Abdul-Khaliq was escorting a funeral procession Thursday in north Austin when a vehicle turned illegally in front of him in an attempt to cut through the stream of cars. Abdul-Khaliq struck the side of the turning vehicle.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the driver was cited for failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.
