Plano Senior High Says No To Honor Stoles At Graduation

PLANO (1080 KRLD) - Seniors at Plano Senior High School are being told that a school policy will not let them wear stoles, tassels, or regalia from student clubs when they graduate next Thursday.

This includes students in the National Honor Society, who have often spent years working to maintain a high GPA while doing hours of community service. The club stole, stamped with the NHS seal, reflects that dedication.

"I don't think Plano's doing the right thing here," says senior Akeas Syed.

Syed and his friends in NHS heard they couldn't wear the stole when they went to ask the club's advisors whether it was allowed.

"They said 'No you can't do that'. And when we asked why, they said Plano just wants to keep everything uniform instead of having NHS kids wear our stuff," Syed says.

Syed says Plano Senior High made the policy so that other students won't feel excluded if they aren't in the honor society or other clubs.

"I guess they feel extra tassels or stoles are advertising in a sense," he says.

But he doesn't agree with the school's policy.

"I've worked hard for this, and I should be able to show my honors," Syed says. "We're not just celebrating the achievement of graduating high school. We're celebrating all the achievements that have happened along the way and gotten us here. Regardless of whatever we're wearing, we've all accomplished something."

Banning regalia from student clubs is not a district-wide policy. Graduating seniors at Plano West and Plano East Senior High Schools can wear NHS stoles at their ceremonies.

If they have a GPA above 3.6, Plano Senior High students can wear a plain white honor stole at their graduation.

School Administrators have yet to comment.
