19-year-old dead after plane crashes, bursts into flames in North Texas

19-year-old killed in North Texas plane crash

JOHNSON COUNTY — 19-year-old Jon Diego Monreal died flying a plane that crashed in a field Wednesday night in Johnson County.

Johnson County Emergency Management said the plane went down around 8:45 p.m. near 8601 W. FM 4. The Texas Department of Public Safety says preliminary investigations show the Cessna 150L aircraft ran out of fuel.

The plane was engulfed in flames when responders arrived. There were no passengers with Monreal.

His older brother said Monreal loved to fly. He graduated from Crowley ISD's Collegiate Academy a year ago and played on the soccer team. Monreal's flight instructor said he was one of the best students in the class and reportedly signed off on allowing him to fly alone about two months ago.

Data from Flight Aware shows the plane flying for about 49 minutes during multiple maneuvers and hitting an airspeed as low as 15 miles an hour at one point.

DPS says the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have taken over the investigation.
