ADDISON (CBSDFW.COM) - For those heeding the warning, "don't drive unless you have to," that means pizza delivery drivers have to a whole lot more.
Waking up to shovel your sidewalk can work up an appetite, but after scraping off ice, the last thing many want to do is drive in it. That's when i Fratelli driver Mark Harper comes to the rescue. "You can't really go wrong with pizza, especially in the cold because it's a hot meal. It comes right to your door, right?" Harper said.
You might expect pizza delivery orders to spike at night during the ice storm, but travel-weary workers kept phones ringing throughout today, especially at lunchtime. "I get a lot of people saying how appreciative they are for us going out in this kind of weather, braving the weather," Harper said.
Employees at the accounting firm, Chapman, Hext & Co. say they were lucky enough to make it to work in one piece, so the last thing they wanted was to risk coming and going on their lunch breaks. "This is just helpful and helps keep the employees safe and feeds them at the same time," Executive Assistant Jacey Guess said.
However the pizza chain is prepared to scale back if conditions worsen. "We'll limit our areas if it gets too bad, or if it gets too dark where we can't see the roads, where the ice patches are, we'll close a bit early, just for the safety of the drivers," Harper said.
