FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) – Efforts to expand liquor sales in Frisco are going into overdrive for the next few days. That's because a key deadline is approaching in order to get the issue to voters in November.

Petitioners are going door-to-door in neighborhoods trying to gather nearly 10,000 signatures. Their goal is to have voters decide whether to legalize the sale of all alcoholic beverages in the city.

You may be seeing more bright yellow T-shirts around Frisco for the next few days. That's because supporters of expanded alcohol sales are targeting neighborhoods to try to reach as many voters as possible.

Sharon Mack signed the petition. "There are a lot of people that drink alcohol and enjoy it, so I think it should be more readily available," Mack said.

Frisco is partially in Denton County, partially in Collin County, and has newly annexed property. Right now, most of the city allows beer and wine sales in stores, with mixed drinks also allowed in some restaurants. However, members of the Frisco Committee for Economic Growth want to allow package stores, wineries, and breweries and to make the laws universal throughout the city.

"Some of the things maybe make more money, but it's not any value for the community," said John Mathew, who wants to keep the laws the way they are. "Even they get it from outside, but at least now they cannot just go and get the liquor right away," Mathew said.

But some of those signing the petition say expanding alcohol sales is inevitable as Frisco grows. "It's growing a lot, and there's a lot coming into the area, so I think that it's a good move," said Deborah Slater, who supports expanding alcohol sales.

Petitioners have until July 17 to collect the signatures, but they say if they don't make that deadline, they'll focus on getting a measure on the May ballot instead.
