Paxton's Friends Send Big Checks To Pay His Legal Bills

AUSTIN (AP) - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has received nearly $330,000 from friends and donors to help pay his legal defense against criminal charges of securities fraud.
State filings made public Tuesday reveal the first glimpse at those underwriting Paxton's legal bills since the Republican was indicted last summer on two felony counts of defrauding wealthy investors in a tech startup.
Paxton has pleaded not guilty.
Among those paying Paxton's court costs is Preferred Medical CEO James Webb, who pitched in $100,000 and is a longtime donor of the state's top prosecutor.
Paxton is also fighting a separate civil lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission. Federal regulators similarly accuse Paxton of not disclosing to investors that Servergy Inc. paid him to recruit new backers to the data-server company.
