'Open Carry' Group To Gather In Arlington

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Fresh off of their victory in federal court, a group known for demonstrating while carrying guns will gather again, this time in Arlington. Open Carry Tarrant County members will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evening with long guns and copies of the Second Amendment.

For the past couple of months, the Open Carry Tarrant County members were prohibited from having demonstrations in Arlington because of a new ordinance. But that changed after a federal judge granted the group a temporary injunction against the City of Arlington.

Back in May, the city passed an ordinance that prevented demonstrators -- like those with Open Carry Tarrant County -- to pass out materials to drivers. The city said that this ordinance was about maintaining safety. But the Open Carry Tarrant County members argued that the move went against their First Amendment rights.

Open Carry Tarrant County took the issue to federal court. In a 26-page report, the judge said that, even though someone's message might make others feel uncomfortable, that alone is not enough to limit their right to free speech.

Arlington officials have not yet responded to the judge's ruling. The city can choose to repeal the ordinance or continue to fight this issue within the legal system.
