PD: Teen Who Ran After Deadly Crash Located, Admits To Hit & Run
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - One person was killed early Friday morning after a hit-and-run crash in the heart of downtown Dallas. Police say a Dodge Charger and Nissan Altima were involved in the crash on eastbound Interstate-30, near Good Latimer.
It was around 12:30 a.m. when the female driver of the Charger, later identified as Maria Miralrio, was speeding and rear-ended a woman driving the Altima.
After being hit from behind the driver crashed into the support for an overhead highway sign and her car flipped. The impact was so forceful that the Altima crumpled and first-responders had to cut the driver, a yet to be identified 40-year-old woman, out of the car. The woman died at the scene.
According to investigators, 19-year-old Miralrio got out of her car after the crash and ran away on foot.
With the car still at the scene, deputies with the Dallas County Sheriff's Department traced the registration and went to the house associated with the car. Investigators say they found Miralrio at the house and she confessed to being the driver of the Charger and fleeing the accident scene.
Miralrio has been charged in relation to an accident involving death. Officials say she is under suicide watch and is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Investigators have not said if the teen gave an explanation of what lead up to the crash.
The overhead sign on the bridge that spans two ramps toward Interstate-45 and Central Expressway was nearly knocked down and at lunchtime was still being dismantled. The transition lanes to 45 and 75 remained closed for hours on Friday and officials with the Texas Department of Transportation say it could be several days before the overhead sign can be replaced.
