One Day To Raise Millions Of Dollars
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The donations collected in one day can make a huge impact all year long for hundreds of North Texas non-profit charities.
By early evening for this year's North Texas Giving Day, more than 20 million dollars had been raised…and counting.
Every dollar helps, says Erin Wilde. At one time, she needed help escaping an abusive relationship and turned to SafeHaven of Tarrant County.
"I was actually married to a football player and he was very physically abusive to me," said Wilde.
Wilde says she was scared, didn't have any money or a home, until the shelter took her in.
"They gave me the funds and backpacks and school supplies that I needed," she recalled. "That's one of the biggest worries with a victim, especially if you have kids because you don't want them to not have a meal. You don't want them to not have clothes on their backs."
SafeHaven is one of hundreds of non-profits who participate in North Texas Giving Day. Donations are accepted online. The charities are listed on the website, including Legacy Boxer Rescue.
Last year, the group raised $19,000. This year, they are hoping to hit $30,000.
The SPCA of Texas is also looking for donations. The non-profit posted a video of a puppy named Japser with a back leg injury. The SPCA says it will help him with donations made on giving day.
No matter what the cause, the participating non-profits say giving day is crucial to the rest of the year.
