Officials Say Hole In I-35E Bridge Has Been Repaired

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Wednesday night road crews were busy patching up a considerable hole that opened up in a bridge on Interstate-35E.

A northbound lane of I-35E near Mayhill Road was closed earlier in the afternoon and had traffic at a crawl for hours.

Now commuters through southwest Denton are concerned about the Thursday morning drive.

Engineers were called out early to evaluate the problem and determine the best course of action to repair the damage.

To call the problem a pothole doesn't really do it justice. The hole, in the emergency land of the overpass, is through-and-through, with only rebar visible before the ground below.

Officials with 35 Express Project are still standing by the estimate that the right lane of NB I-35E will only be closed until midnight. Officials say the repairs have been made and they are simply waiting for the concrete to cure.

Wednesday afternoon Kimberly Sims, with the 35 Express Project, said engineers were "still investigating" what caused the damage.

For the afternoon commute drivers going north were encouraged to exit at Post Oak Drive to get to Mayhill/State School Road. Motorists headed south would have to exit at Loop 288 to access the road.

Drivers heading north through Denton were simply encouraged to find an alternate route.
