Officials Investigating Sudden Rise In Cyclospora Infection Cases
TARRANT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) -- Officials in Tarrant County are trying to determine what is behind a recent surge in cyclospora infection cases.
Tarrant County has seen eight cases over the last month alone; 61 people have come down with the stomach bug across Texas.
Cyclospora is an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite in contaminated food or water.
Last year, more than 270 people were affected across the state. The illness was linked to fresh cilantro, bagged salad mix, raspberries and basil.
Officials with Tarrant County Public Health say they are "investigating the increased number of local cases" to try and determine if there's a singular reason for all of the recent infections.
Symptoms include diarrhea that lasts more than a few days, a lack of appetite, and a lack of energy.
Doctors recommend that all produce be thoroughly washed to remove any potential contamination.
In the meantime, health workers at Tarrant County Public Health are encouraged to test for the infection if a patient reports any symptoms.
