HURST (CBSDFW.COM) - Gunfire erupted in a quiet neighborhood in Hurst Monday night as police chased an armed suspect and said they had no choice but to use deadly force.

It happened just after 6:30 pm. Police say it started off as a domestic dispute at an apartment complex near W. Redbud Drive.

The suspect, a 51-year-old man, apparently ran from police. Police drove around looking for him, and one eventually spotted in a nearby backyard.

Police say when they discovered the suspect, he had a gun, and they had no choice but to fire.

"Our Officer fired several shots, and then when another officer arrived they handcuffed him and then he started to keep an eye on him. He did start to pass away away at that time so they did CPR on him," said Assistant Police Chief Steve Niekamp.

The man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A neighbor tells CBS11, "I was out here in the driveway playing with my grandson, and I heard several gun shots. It was pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. Pow."

Police are speaking to neighbors and to the person in the domestic dispute with the suspect.

The officer who fired the shots will be placed on paid administrative leave throughout the investigation.
