Obtaining An Advanced Degree Secured A Dallas Auditor A Bright Future
Jack Benage is an external auditor at KPMG in Dallas. He audits a company's financial data and reviews their processes. He does the quarterly and annual review of financial statements of publicly held companies prior to them being released to the public.
Benage earned his bachelor's in business at Southern Methodist University (SMU).
"I took a variety of classes and knew that it was a tough job market. My brother had a business degree and was able to get a job whereas many people we knew weren't able to because of their lack of higher education with a focus in a strong field. I pursued a master's degree because I knew it would help me get a good job in a great field."
Benage pursued a Master's of Science in Accounting at SMU and interned full-time for a quarter at KPMG. Interning gave him the opportunity to apply his knowledge in the workplace. After his internship, he finished his coursework and was quickly offered a position with the firm.
"I enjoy what I do. I get to work with a variety of companies and get exposed to many different industries," said Benage.
"You gain an advanced knowledge of your field by pursuing a master's. You get to build on your topic of interest. If you are in an area of study that is a highly technical one where individuals are in demand, it is worth it to see your education through to fruition. Ultimately, you will recoup the costs of the education by the opportunities you will create."
