Nurse, Former Mayor Realized Education Is Vital To Success

Jeanette Wisdom is a nurse supervisor for the Multi-Disciplinary Surgery Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Multi-Disciplinary Surgery Center serves patients undergoing colorectal, bariatric, endocrine and general surgery like hernia repairs and gall bladder removal.

Wisdom earned her nursing degree at University at Texas at Arlington and a master's of business administration degree at Texas A&M University – Commerce.  Finished with her course work, Wisdom is currently working on the research for her doctoral dissertation. Her topic is "Business Community Acceptance of Online Course Delivery and Employability Among Higher Educational Program Graduates."

Wisdom is the first in her family to earn a college degree. "I wanted my children to see this and inspire them to earn one. I was working as a nurse and was mayor pro-tem of Blooming Grove, Texas and felt that I might have to run the city one day and went back to school to earn a master's degree. I wanted to have the education behind me to show that I would be good steward with the city's funds," said Wisdom who did go on to become the mayor of Blooming Grove.

Looking to expand her horizons, Wisdom finished her doctoral coursework, moved to Dallas, and took a position as a nurse supervisor at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Wisdom's advise for those considering returning to school: "Just do it. There are so many opportunities, you never know what doors will be opened by education but, you know that there are doors that do not open without education. With distance learning via online classes it makes it easier for people to return to school."

Wisdom's biggest challenge: "Time. I worked full-time as a nurse at UT Southwestern, was working full-time as a school nurse at Blooming Grove ISD, was enrolled in a master's program, and on the city council all while being mother."

"My biggest reward was building my self-confidence. I completed it; I was able to do this. The feeling of accomplishment meant everything to me," said Wisdom on completing her degrees.
