North Texas Storm Damages Estimated At $300 Million
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Severe weather that brought three tornadoes and large hail to North Texas last week are estimated to have caused $300 million in insured losses.
The Insurance Council of Texas estimates that nearly 24,000 vehicles and 12,000 homes were damaged in the area by the storm that hit on Thursday, April 3.
Softball-sized hail was reported in Denton, leaving a number of car windshields broken and vehicle bodies damaged.
"Whenever you have golf ball sized hail or larger, you're going to have damage to cars; you're going to have damage to roofs," said ICT spokesman Mark Hanna. "The price of a roof these days has gone up. You starting up roofs and cars, and it adds up to a big figure."
At least five people were injured when an EF-1 tornado hit near the city of Merit, just northeast of Greenville. The city of Farmersville also saw an EF-0 tornado, where one minor injury was reported.
Heavier damage was reported near Birthright in Hopkins County, where an EF-1 tornado destroyed the Burger Barn Restaurant and heavily damaged other local businesses and homes.

Hanna advises consumers in the area to work with their insurance adjusters if they suffered any damages.
"Insurance companies are moving as quickly as possible in assessing the damage to everyone's property in the area," said Hanna. "Once the damage has been determined, we highly recommend that policyholders turn to local businesses for their auto and home repairs."
