North Texas Residents Fed Up With Big Trucks In Their Neighborhood

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A steady stream of big trucks, once in the morning and again in the evening are passing through Merrell Road in North Dallas illegally.

In what's normally a quiet neighborhood – there's an elementary school, surrounded by homes on the street – the trucks aren't a welcome disruption.

"On a daily basis, we have anywhere from 50 - 60 UPS trucks," resident Garrett Medeiros told CBS 11 News.

This in spite of a big black and white sign posted clearly on the side of the road that reads "No trucks over two tons except for delivery purposes."

And yet, the trucks have passed the street every day for the last three weeks since it's a shorter route to the UPS customer center at the end of Merrell.

"I think it's important that they're aware of the risk they are putting our neighborhood in," Medeiros said.

He and the other neighbors called the police, who then contacted UPS who told them they would stop. But they didn't.

Consumer Justice reached out to UPS for comment. They said: "We are actively seeking alternatives for our drivers to get access to their routes. We should have the situation resolved very soon."

Medeiros said UPS trucks stopped cutting through the street after Consumer Justice brought the issue to their attention.

A Dallas city spokesman said residents can call 311 to report any truck streets illegally. They can also click here for help.

Violators faces fines of $35 to $45 per offense. Based on Garrett's numbers, using his street could cost upwards of $27,00 a day.
